This time I was more impressed, getting caught up in the imagination of the fictional TV show “The Library” and intrigued by the story’s strange metafictional overlaps. Later I read a second story, her novella “Magic For Beginners”, when it was also nominated for something, although I don’t remember which award since I didn’t write anything down and it was nominated for (and won) many awards. The story seemed like it was all style and no substance, the exact opposite of my tastes in fiction, short or otherwise. But I do sometimes read award nominees, so I read Link’s “The Faery Handbag” along with the other novelettes on the 2005 Nebula shortlist. I like so few short stories that I only read collections if I’ve already read something by the author and been really impressed. When her first collection, Stranger Things Happen, came out I read a ton of good reviews.
